Field testing the Automaton, or; How I learned to stop worrying and love multiband compression. *MSN me for torrent*

Edit: Ask me for the torrent if you're interested.

I want to know:

1) Are the songs any good?
2) Are the levels ok? (vocals getting lost in the mix? drum too loud? not loud enough? etc.) I have a severe tendency to overmix the guitars.
3) I know the drums sound like shit, don't bother pointing it out just tell me if they sit in the mix well ^_^
4) Is the overall volume too loud? Too low? Does it sound ok at different volumes? Any songs that pop out much louder than others? Etc.
5) Reverb? Too much? Too lil'?
6) Does the sound tire your ears? Is everything too harsh or brittle? Or too muddy?

Song specific issues:

- Step: Lacking definition? Lead coming through clear?
- Gene Says: The drums sound like shit, is it a deal breaker?
- The Fall: Too much 'verb?
- Disco: Bass too loud?
- Doomsday Gap: Too harsh? Is the chorus ruining it ('Try to run...')? Sound too much like RATM?
- Goodbye Katherine: Too muddy? Back vocals in 2nd part too loud?

Issues that are already fixed:
- Velour Inc., drums have been fixed and are lower in the mix, so are the vocals.

Now, what I wanna know is if this thing can be sold or not. I do plan on bumming this around to producers or labels or something eventually. What I wanna know is: is it good enough? Be brutally honest. Please.

I'm not going for top quality overproduced sound here. Going in for more of a White Light/White Heat, Velvet Undergroundish, early Sonic Youth, raw, loud rawk out sound. Early punk sound, grungy sound, maybe.

And I need the feedback relatively quickly. Take your time to listen to it carefully, but gimme feedback asap. I'll definitely be tweaking this thing a little more. But overall, how is it? I'm leaving for Montreal Wednesday, so if I can't get everything down pat before then I'll have to postpone the launch date to late September, which means it'll only be available in stores around Decemberish.

Thanks guys!

Cool

Cool

Yeah. The BT method is slow

Yeah. The BT method is slow as fudge. Oh well. Keep seedin' and downloadin', it'll get there.

(my upload speed is crap)

I'll seed it for as long as

I'll seed it for as long as you need it.

And the torrent has been speeding up. That's the beauty of BT. Seed seed seed yeah!

Fuckin' awesome.

Fuckin' awesome.

1) Yes, they are. Right now, my favorites are We Dress Like Rockstar and We Must Not Allow a Doomsday Gap.

2) Levels are fine.

3) The drums sound like shit. Nah, just kidding. Like I said before, it might not be the strongest part of your music, but they don't sound bad to me. So yeah, the drums are alright.

4) The volume of the songs is similar to the volume of the rest of the music I listen to. I can insert them in my list and I don't need to adjust the volume at all, unlike the music from your first album. I only tried loud, and louder, though.

5) There's not one song were I thought "hey, there's too much reverb in this song" or "hey, there's not enough reverb in this song".

6) No, my ears were fine, all the way.

Step: I like it. The lead guitar is clear, even if it doesn't necessarily take center stage in this song. Goes well with the flow of the song IMO.

Come Into My Disco: Are you kidding? If anything, the bass isn't loud enough. I gotta be honest, I wasn't that impressed with the little sample I listened to in Edmundston, but it came out very well in the end. Love it.

Gene Says: Not my favorite. The drums are subtle I guess, but not a deal breaker. I love this song from 3:30 on up.

The Fall: lol awesome lyrics. I'm listening to it again right now, and I don't think 'verb' is an issue. Love the Trombone by the way. Sounds like something that could work well in a movie, like 1:08+, minus the vocals. I like the part where you sing 'at all' right after 'today was not a good day/my day'. Not my favorite, but a good addition to the album.

Doomsday Gap: Not too harsh. The chorus doesn't ruin everything, but I have some issues with it. The first part is alright(Try to run...). It's the "all the world yeah all the world..." part that sounds like overkill to me.

Also, in the Red Baron version, at the end of the guitar riff, there was a guitar solo sound. It sounded raw, and added something to the riff IMO. Every time I listen to doomsday, I actually still hear that part in my head. I think you should have added that to the riff #3, at least.

Goodbye, Katherine: No, the back vocals aren't too loud.

I'll continue later.

Yeah. I was trying to fit

Yeah. I was trying to fit some lyrics on the Red Baron's riff. It came out sounding like white-ass rap. Oh well. :P

I'm thinking of adding some lead to it or a solo or somesuch.

Also that's probably not the final title for the song. I thought that one was ok, but I dunno.

I like Doomsday Gap very

I like Doomsday Gap very much for a title.

All the songs were listened

All the songs were listened to on the Full Bass & Treble equalizer on Winamp.

I like the songs. The ones that stick in my head more are We Feel Like People, The Fall, Disco and Doomsday.

Velour, Inc: exept for what has been fixed I got nothing to say.

Rockstars: I thought the last strum was a bit short. I would've liked to hear a more prolonged sound at the end.

People: The song sounds all right to me.

Step: I thought the lead wasn't lound enough and I thought it did lack a little definition. I can hear the drums ok but the rhythm and lead guitars were kind of lost in the background especially in the parts were you say "oh yeah yeah yuh yeah yeah"

The Fall: I like this song as it is.

Disco: I really like this one, the bass is not too loud. It could even be a tiny bit louder but then again maybe that would be too loud.

Gene: The drums on this one aren't in the way. They are softer as the song is. I really like the guitar riff in this one.

Doomsday: I like the vibe in this one. The guitar doesn't sound that much like Tom Morello and as we said this weekend I thought the voice sounded more like Johnny Go from Jean Leloup but with different music. This song has attitude. Also I like the chorus (and when you say "Oh Lord"), it doesn't ruin anything.

Goodbye: I really like the way this song sounds. I thought the back vocals in the second part were really good. I thought it was a little like Sid Barrett did with the old Pink Floyd, I like it.

2) The levels seemed fine to me except maybe for Sketch. In the headphones I was wearing I thought the bass a bit loud.

3) Drum mix seemed fine to me.

5) I didn't notice anything according to reverb but normally I would need to hear a couple of samples with more and less reverb to know for sure. Anyway I thought it was ok.

6) Overall the sound was good. It wasn't tiring nor was it aggressive.

I think it can be sold and you should definitely send it around once it's completely finished.

If there is not enough details in my feedback, ask for more.

Cool. Yeah the problem with

Cool. Yeah the problem with Rockstars is that the compression is gating some sounds below the treshold, so things appear to cut in and out too quickly in the intro and at the end. I have no idea how to set it so it gates the noise floor but leaves the acoustic guitar untouched. The ac. guitar track was recorded at too low a volume to begin with.

I guess my main concern is: are the songs just 'good' or 'good good'. It's hard to explain. I mean, is it something that would 'work'? That people would like? Like a serious outing from a band? I mean I dunno, I can't be objective about it.

I guess I also want to know

I guess I also want to know if the energy is getting across. This is supposed to be an energetic record, yknow raw 'n loud. Well except for the 3 quieter songs.

But yeah. I mean, does it thump you in the chest when you hear it? Or is it just like yeah, womp womp womp.

I can't see how people

I can't see how people wouldn't appreciate this. This is very sellable IMO, especially if you sell the right songs the right way(videos and free songs online), and especially if you sell your 'story'.

As for producers, my guess is they can appreciate good music when they hear it. They should be able to put the music into perspective - you made everything yourself in the basement of your home. Also, if you become a little cult hit online, well, it gives them another reason to pay attention.

The energy gets across, especially in We Feel Like People, Doomsday Gap, Sketch, We Dress Like Rockstars, Velour inc., and Step.

I don't know if I wrote about this here or if I only told Jesse about it, but anyway, I watched an hour long interview of Tim Ferris done by the creator of CDbaby.com(one of the biggest seller of Independent music online) for a panel somewhere, and one of the things he mentioned that stuck with me is that the best independent bands that sell on his site all have a story that gets people interested in the first place.

For example, there's this one lady who's on a boat 10 months out of the year, and when she comes back to Nova Scotia or something, she records an entire album. Now that's not something you hear about everyday, and it gets people interested. And it sells!

Also, I wanted to say this, the reason why I love We Dress Like Rockstars so much is because it hooks me. At first, you don't really know what to expect, than it cuts to this awesome guitar riff, and I love it. I love the intro as it is, even if it's unintentional.

But yeah, the energy gets across. I find myself rocking my head back'n'forth while playing poker(and again, while losing), so it rawks.

I have been listening to it

I have been listening to it on endless loop. im almost ready to start commenting on it soon

Here are more details: Some

Here are more details:

Some songs (Feel Like People, The Fall, Disco and Doomsday) are quite catchy and I found myself playing them in my mind while working. I think that all the songs will fluctuate between being in & out of my favorites.

I think your music is very good and it should definitely sell on the indie market. As for the public, I think Doomsday could get some radio time and I think a producer should be able to sniff out the potential here. Take the exact same songs with a professional studio, musicians(at least drummer), a producer and I think you could have a successful album.

BTW: I prefer a Red Baron title to what you have there.. it's a good title but I just can't imagine a radio announcer saying something like "We've just heard We Must not Allow a Doomsday Gap from 21st Century Complex" and since getting out there seems to be the goal here I think you should go with a simpler title.. something in the likes of "The (Red)Baron" or anything that's easier to remember. I see it as Dr. Strangelove.. we all know it's also called How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb but we are fans of the movie, publicly it's known as Dr. Strangelove.. I think you should be able to figure out what I mean.

It's kind of hard to say if it could be considered as a "serious outing from a band." My concern is not the music but rather the drum machine (yeah, I know you know). If the drum parts were done by a drummer then I would say yes. When I was listening to the samples on your computer the sound quality was way better, probably because of your monitors and I guess the mp3 compression makes a noticeable difference in the sound of the drum machine(or maybe it's just my sucky speakers/headphones). I really had the idea that the drums sounded more realistic. All the rest of the music is good (as in guitars/bazzssz/voice(thumbs up on that improvement)/keyboards/etc) and if I were a producer I'd give you a shot. I would consider your album to be a serious demo of your abilities as a writer/compositor/musician.

I think the energy issue is something that should change with different people listening to it. I don't feel like dancin' n jumpin' all around (except for Disco) but then again I think only Jethro Tull can manage to make me jump all around and it's not really the music it's more of the Ian Anderson. I feel the energy way more when you play it live but that's probably the same for everyone. Anyway, if someone is looking to rock out, he could easily do it with your album.

Like I said earlier,

Like I said earlier, Doomsday Gap is a good title, without the 'We Must Not Allow a'. Although you can always keep the long title for the album but sell it as Doomsday Gap.

I don't think Red Baron really fits well with the lyrics of the song.

Yeah the Red Baron title I

Yeah the Red Baron title I gave was only because I know that's where the riff is from but Doomsday Gap does sound good. I thought you were saying "Doomsday Gap" because the complete title was too long to type.

EDIT: On second thought I don't really care what the lyrics say when it comes to the title. I like Doomsday Gap but I still prefer a Baron type title.

I was gonna go with Rage

I was gonna go with Rage Against the Baron, but I figured that would be a cheap shot.

That or Some Kind of Zeppelin

Yup I know what you mean TD,

Yup I know what you mean TD, a Baron type title sounds awesome. Although I really think it's more appropriate for the old version than it is for this one. All good.

Anyone else have feedback?

Anyone else have feedback? Anything else from the people who did post feedback?

I plan on sending it out pretty soon, so if anything else pops out...?

Title for baron is gonna be The Doomsday Gap.

Thanks.

Not much I can add at this

Not much I can add at this point.

Yeah, I know. I appreciate

Yeah, I know. I appreciate you and TB giving me feedback.

It's just that like 7 people asked me for the torrent and only 2 people replied.

I mean this is a feedback/test thread, so what's the point of asking me for the album if you're not gonna bother replying, y'know?

Oh well.

Sorry for the late reply but

Sorry for the late reply but here it is anyway.

First I would say that I pretty much agree with the general opinion that your album is very good. I can see that people will want to spend money on this. A whole lot of the songs are pretty catchy, in fact I have had a couple of them playing in my head for the last few days.

Now for something a bit more detailed,

I've listened to the album with my headphones and my speakers and I'd say that the sound is good. I am able to hear every instrument clearly in mostly every song. I think the level of the drums is fine and the overall volume too. I've compared the volume between your songs and a couple of other songs that I chose randomly in my library and I didn't have to reajust the volume. I also had no problems with my ears. Overall, I think you did a very good job mixing your songs. Pretty much everything seems fine to me. Here are few things that I think could be looked at but pretty much everything have been said before.

The first four songs seem fine to me.

Step in the wrong direction: The lead could be a little louder but I also like it as it is. I thnik it gives a different sound with the lead a bit more subtle.

The Fall: Fine the way it is.

Come into my disco: The bass is good indeed. A little more maybe?

Gene says: Sounds great. Love it.

Doomsday Gap: I love the radio part a lot. It's true that you sound a bit like Zach de la rocha but I think it sounds great. Lots of attitude in this song. The guitars are also good.

Goodbye Katherine: Sounds fine to me. I also think it's a very good song.

For the songs as themselves, it's really hard for me to pick two or three songs to be my favorites because I can find something I like in almost every single one. If I had to choose one I would maybe go with We feel like people but it's very close contest. I think the first five are really catchy and are good songs to simply rock out. I love the sound you have with the keyboards arrangements and the guitars work is quite good too. The other five songs are more different from one antoher and from the first five and I think they're a bit more deep. I like what you have done there.

I honestly think you did an amazing job. Congrats and I hope you'll be rewarded for your hard work.

Thanks :D Yeah, no worries

Thanks :D

Yeah, no worries about the delay and stuff, I'm just getting a little nervous before launch :P

I did some adjustments and so on, so what you guys got isn't exactly the final product. I think I fixed most of the problems that have been pointed out.

I gave the album to the

I gave the album to the intern here, he likes pretty much the same shit as we do (Bela Fleck, Velvet, Gentle Giant, Pink Floyd, etc.)

Here's what he told me
-He thinks the voice is particular but he likes it, he said you had a nice voice.
-He said he was impressed with the quality, when I told him a friend recorded it he thought he would be able to say it was amateur but he wasn't.
-He said he likes most of the guitar riffs and was impressed that you were playing all instruments.
-Basically he said it was some good music.

There you go.

Cool. Thanks. I already

Cool. Thanks.

I already hate almost everything about it. That's how it goes.

Oh well it's up in stores now.

I need to try and market it or something when I get a break from school.
